Note at the end of the Magdalen Asylum register (1856-1872)

“When the census was taken on 1 June 1880 there were 197 inmates, exclusive of the sisters and employees in the laundry, etc. but including Penitents and Industrial School Girls. Total during the year, 270. On the 31 May 1879 there were 77 in the industrial school and 52 admitted during the year, total 129. Inmates of the asylum, 141. (total 270). Number of days board during the year ... 67,525. This number was formed by multiplying 185 (number of inmates) by 365 number of days in the year. Total amount during the same period from city for the support of those placed in the institution by their officers $12,691.00. As the amount due for each month is not paid until convenient, this amount is for 12 months, but not precisely for the last 12 months. Of the 270 inmates one is Japanese, one Negro and two Indian.”
